laramie project response!
QUESTION: how did the laramie project make you feel?
The Laramie Project has a lot to offer including a good story and a good message to take away from. The Laramie Project forces one to look inside their heart and see what really matters in life and see what certain people have to go through in life. It is very insightful and lets us explore the tragic events of someone who was discriminated against, which allows us to think about our opinions on the matter. I didn’t expect to be reading about something as deep as this. It was very intense and the author and interviewees did not hold back on the gruesome details and harsh behaviors of what went on. I felt very bad for Matthew Sheppard, but then came to realize how his story benefits our culture and our society. His story sets an example for the reality of how people deal with things that they do not believe in, and lets us create our own ways of how we would have dealt with it differently instead of seeing people get hurt by how it was dealt with in the story. I felt very inspired by this story and I’m glad I learned about the kind of prejudice there is against homosexuals. The world will benefit off of hearing this story because the knowledge will be out there as to how tragic this was and to what lengths people will go to get rid of things they don’t like.
When Matthew Sheppard’s father spoke to Aaron McKinney was one of the best parts on the book. I couldn’t believe that McKinney was trying to defend himself to Matthews’ father, nothing he ever said could make his father ever understand, and it just blew me away that he would try. Thankfully, just like we were all hoping for, Matthew’s father told him off by saying that his actions were completely unforgivable and that no matter how much he tried to justify his actions, he would never understand. But he still tried to explain to his side of the whole situation and why killing someone because of their choices are unfair. I thought that Mr. Sheppard was very relaxed about the whole thing and kind of let his son go with peace. He knew the deed was done and there was nothing he could do, but he wanted nothing of the sort to happen to anyone else choosing to live a different lifestyle like his son had. It was amazing to me how great his parents held themselves and dealt with their son’s death. Killing someone because of their sexuality is so wrong and those actions could never ever be justified in my opinion. When I think of the crime scenes described I couldn’t think about anything but how unfair it was that he had to die, and how much sadness his parents must have felt for the loss of their completely innocent child.
Through all of the interviews and testimonies, the book gave us so many different perspectives on Matthew’s story; the pros and the cons, the ins and outs, and all the opinions; positive or negative. I’m sure we all found some people we related to, or some people that we agreed with or didn’t agree with which allowed an even greater connection to ultimately anyone who reads this story. It is interesting to see what can happen in a supposedly perfect town, and how many secrets there can be. Everyone looked at Laramie as a wonderful perfect city, and it was so unexpected for something like this to happen there. I find myself liking thing interesting mystery crime scene stories so I know I would like this story, but it was so much more than that. I found myself in deep thought and in awe of the events that went down in this story. I was intrigued by the amount of detail and how people were connected in the story which tied everything together. The book as a whole had a lot deeper message if it is read all the way through and started with an open mind. This is a real issue that more than just Matthew has gone through, and this story was a good way to grab people’s attention and say ‘hey, this stuff really happens’. This isn’t just a story. Being open minded to people’s lifestyles and beliefs is very rewarding and will truly make the world a better place.

Laramie Reflection
I thought the Laramie Project was a harder read than anything else we have read in the class so far. The reason I think this is because its very emotional. When we read it in class it was very easy to see what many of the people went through. This made it harder to read because many peoples lives were changed by this. All of the characters in the play we're so distressed and it showed this in the dialogue. Overall, I think that it was hard to read the Laramie Project.
Maddie Ginsberg- Laramie Reflection
How did you feel while reading The Laramie Project?
If you have never heard of or read about The Laramie Project, you should look it up. The Laramie Project is about the brutal beating and death of a young homosexual man named Matthew Shepard. Matt, as known by his friends, went to a bar, and then left with two young men, Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson. These two took Matt out in the middle of a national park, tied him to a fence and left him for dead… he was found 18 hours later by a college student riding his bike. This is a very touching story that makes me feel so many different emotions it is crazy.
When I heard that we were going to read this play, I already knew how upset I was going to get based on how I reacted the first time I read it. The people who put together this play are a theatre group from New York . They traveled from New York to Laramie , Wyoming , conducted over 200 interviews, made several visits, just so that they could write Matt’s story from the town’s perspective. There is a part in the play where I always get very upset, that is during the interviews with the Baptist priest. The way he talks about the situation is so heartless and rude in my mind, I mean I’m all for people having their own opinions; but when it comes to an opinion about someone’s death, have some respect! Lastly I was truly surprised and touched when we find out that the Catholic priest is the one who set up the vigil for Matthew. I really felt like crying, I know that the Catholic Church is against homosexuality, but the fact that he still set something up for him, that shows real compassion.
In conclusion, the play The Laramie Project made me feel so many different emotions, but in the end I felt only two. Happy and sad, happy because the theatre group wrote the play, yet sad because of what happened to Matthew.
